New 5a Alignment

Postby osufan » Wed Feb 08, 2012 1:26 pm

I do not know who does them or when they will be released. But it is fun to speculate on what the new wrestling district alignments will be for next year. Below is a a proposed alignment for 5a (I will give one for 4a) in a separate topic.

What do you think?

The new 5a alignment that I have put together is based on the new UIL Football District Alignments just released.
It does not include any new wrestling programs for next year since I do not know who those are.
(I did delete 3 in District 19 that I know do not have programs anymore.)

I tried to base the alignments on geography and keeping the current ISD and/or Wrestling District assignments where possible. There was no way to avoid some very large Geographic Regions due to the size of Texas and the sparseness of wrestling programs in West Texas. I did group some Dallas schools with Bryan/Killeen since they are closer than the current grouping with the Houston schools.

I also suggest District sizes of 6 to 10 with 4 going to the playoffs, like is currently done in Football and Basketball.
With 4 going to Regions from each District, it would be rare for a truely qualified wrestler to be shut out of the playoffs.
The current rule, of only 2 advancing, can easily penalize some very good wrestlers in big competive Districts.
This proposed arrangement would result in Regional and State 16 man tournaments like we currently have.

Suggested Playoff Format:
Each of the 4 Districts in a Region advances 4 (with a wrestle off for place 4)
16 man Region is seeded like State is currently (based on matrix of places 1-4 in the 4 Districts).
Each Region advances 4 (with a wrestle off for place 4)
16 man State is seeded same as currently (based on places 1-4 in the 4 Regions).

This ia almost identical to what I put together last week. The only sticky point is who from the south to add to Region 2. The Killeen schools make sense. Bryan and A&M are pretty close to Houston, but i believe they petitioned to get out of region 3 a few years ago based on who they played in football. They now play with the Houston schools. The other option might be the Pflugerville schools.

4 from Districts, 4 from Regions. 16 at state. I like that better than two and four.

I think they will stay with 8 districts per region as I believe that is what they do for every sport. Even if it means 4-6 team districts I would be suprised if they don't do it that way.

I'm afraid of this, too, because UIL always seems to want to force every square peg into their round hole. But it certainly would be better for wrestling if they went with 4 districts per region. If they go 8 districts, some may only have 3 teams. That is ridiculous.

That would be very difficult to do. There is no way they split up the Cypress schools.

4-6 team districts. Don't like it. But, Barrett may be right.

Move one team from District 2 or 4 to District 3. Then you have 3 8 team Districts and only one 9 team District.

Thanks for the effort, but...HIGHLY doubt your "District 2" prediction: can't see UIL putting an Amarillo school and a Lubbock school in with 6 schools from the west side of the Metroplex. No way would they be able to afford to travel to compete with each other (much) during the regular season, and think what it would be like for post-season: SOMEbody is likely to travel a HELL of a long way for EVERY step of the post season, Districts, Regional, and State.

Example: if the Region I tourney FINALLY comes to the Metroplex (has been in El Paso and now Amarillo the last few years), then Amarillo could have to travel to the Metroplex TWICE for Districts and Regionals (650 miles round trip, EACH time), and then, if they are lucky and advance, their prize is they get to travel all the way to Austin (1,000 miles RT) for State, for a total of 2,300 miles in 4 weeks!

(this stuff gets so crazy, I won't even GUESS what the UIL will do, ultimately. All we can really do is watch and wait - and get ready to be surprised....)

You could go 6 four team districts, one two team district (coronado and Tascosa), and one 6 team District. 2 qualify from each four team district, three from the 6 team district, and one from the two team District.

Or, you could just do a 32 team regional and knock it all out in a weekend.
